Gynecomastia or hypertrophy of the breasts of the male

Why does Gynecomastia manifest itself?
In some men the volume of the breasts can increase for various reasons. Often the cause of gynecomastia is due to patient’s overweight, to hormonal alterations, or to the intake of certain drugs; Many times the causes may not be identifiable and the problem is limited only to aesthetic damage. Often gynecomastia is borne by both breasts, but sometimes it can be unilateral, with further aesthetic discomfort, also due to asymmetry.

Are there many types of Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia may be due to an increase in the volume of the breasts due to an excessive development of the mammary gland (Real Gynecomastia ) either due to excessive fat deposited in this region (False Gynecomastia) or in many cases for both reasons at the same time (mixed Gynecomastia). They can be determined through medical consultations and ultrasound scans. In men suffering from gynecomastia the excessive volume of the breasts results in a very embarrassing feminine appearance of the chest. This anomaly is common in elderly men, but is also observed in young people.

How is the surgery performed?
Surgery for gynecomastia differs if the increase in volume of the breasts is due to an excess of the adipose tissue alone or is associated with an increase in the size of the gland. In the first case (false gynecomastia) the intervention for gynecomastia is carried out with the removal of excess adipose tissue through a liposuction. This technique is effective and provides very attractive results with a very rapid post-operative recovery.

Instead if the gynecomastia is due to an increase of the mammary gland (gynecomastia vera) it is necessary to remove the glandular tissue surgically by a small cutaneous incision in the periareolar site, on the border between the dark skin of the areola and the pale skin. In this site the resulting scar will be virtually invisible.
The surgery for gynecomastia can be performed in day hospital under local anesthesia with sedation, or under general anesthesia, with one day of hospitalization. This choice can be made depending on the case, on the extent of the defect to be corrected and also according to the patient’s preferences.

What results can be reached with the removal of gynecomastia?
The results are immediate and of great satisfaction to the patient. The scars are usually quite modest and complications are rare and are related to the formation of hematomas and slight irregularities between the two sides which are easily correctable. In the post-operative period, the patient wears an elastic- compressive garment such as a specific elastic post-operative vest in contact with the skin. It should normally be worn for 3 weeks and on top of it you can wear any garment such as a shirt with a tie.
