How protruding ears are corrected with otoplasty<\/h2>\r\n

Otoplasty brings the ears closer to the head and recreates the normal cartilage folds.<\/strong> The retroauricular sulcus\u2014the area where eyeglass arms (temples) rest\u2014remains unchanged.<\/p>\r\n

Since the concern is due to a shape\/position anomaly of the cartilage framework, otoplasty reshapes and sculpts this tissue to achieve a more harmonious, aesthetically pleasing contour.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

At the end of surgery, the ear cartilage is usually stabilized with internal sutures that dissolve on their own and therefore do not need removal.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

The skin incision used to access the auricular cartilage is hidden in the retroauricular groove and is therefore not visible.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

No haircut is required for otoplasty,<\/strong> and normal daily activities can typically be resumed from the next day.<\/p>\r\n

Type of anesthesia used during otoplasty<\/h2>\r\n

In adults and in teens over 13\u201314 years, otoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis without hospitalization,<\/strong> while general anesthesia is preferable for younger children due to potential restlessness.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\r\n\r\n

Beyond protrusion: can otoplasty also change ear shape?<\/h2>\r\n

Besides \u201cprotruding ears,\u201d several cosmetic ear issues can be corrected with otoplasty.<\/p>\r\n

These include abnormal folding of the upper portion (lop-ear deformity), loss of the upper antihelical fold or rim (often called \u201ccup\u201d or \u201cshell\u201d ear), and earlobe deformities.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n
