\r\n Nearly three out of four teenagers look to celebrities as beauty role models. A study shows that 49.2%<\/strong> of Italian teens would consider aesthetic medicine<\/strong>, while 31.3%<\/strong> would even consider plastic surgery<\/strong>. Girls are clearly overrepresented, but many teens have already thought about it. Specialists are concerned, also because parents often play a driving role behind these choices. <\/p>\r\n THE SURVEY<\/strong> \u2014 These are the results of a study conducted among Italian high-school students, through a partnership between the Italian Society of Aesthetic Medicine and the University of Catanzaro, with the support of the Italian Association of Aesthetic Medicine (AIdME).<\/p>\r\n The sample included 2,265 participants aged 13\u201318: 880 males (38.9%) and 1,385 females (61.1%). Southern regions were slightly overrepresented (69.3%) compared to the North (18.1%) and Centre (12.7%), though the figures remain indicative. <\/p>\r\n Among girls, one of the main concerns is being too short<\/em>: many try to compensate for their height with thinness. <\/p>\r\n Teenage girls pay close attention to make-up and are willing to spend their savings on cosmetics. When it comes to \u201cfixes\u201d, fuller lips are top of the list. Boys, on the other hand, place great emphasis on significant muscle mass to feel more attractive. They are not opposed, if necessary, to undergoing cosmetic surgery. <\/p>\r\n Whom do they emulate? Almost three in four teens look up to celebrities: this holds for 58% of girls and 17% of boys; among boys, sports figures are also highly influential. One in five would rather resemble friends or family members. <\/p>\r\n SURGICAL DREAMS<\/strong> \u2014 17.7%<\/strong> of the sample would like to improve some part of their body, especially girls. 12%<\/strong> of them would \u201chave something done\u201d, mainly breasts, hips, or legs.\r\nAmong boys, 5.7%<\/strong> would turn to surgery, citing muscles, nose, and ears as critical areas. <\/p>\r\n 49.2%<\/strong> would opt for aesthetic medicine<\/strong>, and 31.3%<\/strong> for plastic surgery<\/strong>, again with a clear predominance of female respondents. <\/p>\r\n Finally, 15.8%<\/strong> of girls and 3.3%<\/strong> of boys have already tried aesthetic medicine (e.g., treating acne, reducing unwanted hair or stretch marks) or have undergone surgery to correct nose, ears, or breasts. Interestingly, surgery has been significantly more frequent among boys (5.3%<\/strong>) than girls (1.9%<\/strong>). <\/p>\r\n MOST REQUESTED TREATMENTS<\/strong> \u2014 57%<\/strong> of the sample, especially males, have targeted acne<\/strong> in at least half of cases. Procedures for stretch marks<\/strong> are also popular (16%), particularly on arms and chest due to body building. Unwanted hair<\/strong> is a major concern for 12%<\/strong>, with growing male demand for epilation<\/strong> on chest and back.
