Preoperative consultation

In Reggio Emilia, 20 young women reported a low-cost cosmetic surgery centre after undergoing breast implant procedures. The news broke a few days ago in the media and was featured on the TV show “Le Iene” on Italia Uno.

The price charged for the operation was well below that usually required by other clinics or plastic surgeons. The women complained about shortcomings in the preliminary consultation. Photos were sent via WhatsApp. They also reported issues during the surgery itself and in the postoperative visits.

Choosing the right surgeon should never be underestimated: it is essential to check their education, training, and specific experience in the procedure, as well as the facility where they operate.

The preoperative consultation is every surgeon’s business card — crucial for understanding the patient’s needs and the realistic possibilities of the procedure. This meeting is also important to assess the surgeon’s aesthetic sensitivity through images, photographs, and questions.

Specific studies have shown that patients who are well informed about the surgery they will undergo and about the preoperative procedures experience less anxiety and face a lower risk of complications, particularly surgical wound infections.

The period before surgery should also be used by patients to gather all the necessary information about the operation: in this phase, it is very important to overcome fears and openly talk with the doctor to understand how the procedure will be carried out, what alternatives are available, and what risks are associated with the surgery itself and with anaesthesia.

During meetings with the surgeon, patients should inform them about any ongoing treatments so that they can advise which medications should be suspended in the weeks or even the 24 hours prior to the operation.

Therefore, never underestimate the preoperative consultation and always pay the utmost attention when choosing both the surgeon and the facility.
