In some people, fat tends to accumulate in the form of fat pads that slowly but gradually increase in volume. These pads, often improperly called cellulite, can alter the silhouette in a very evident and unpleasant way.
With the techniques of ultrasonic liposuction / lipoaspiration, microliposuction and liposculpture it is possible to remove excess fat present in well-defined body areas such as hips, double chin, belly, knees, thighs and buttocks and give the body a more harmonious profile and pleasant.
The objectives of liposuction and liposculpture
The remodeling of body adipose tissue through liposuction, microliposuction and ultrasonic liposculpture consists in regularizing, as far as possible, the body contour to bring the silhouette of a specific region of the body back to the right proportions.
The techniques of liposuction, microliposuction and liposculpture are used to achieve the best proportions between the various elements of the body figure. In other words, better ratios are created between the concavity and convexity of the profile with more proportionate volumes.
Excessively adipose buttocks or hips that are too wide, for example, can be reduced in volume with a liposuction or lipoaspiration which reduces the adipose tissue and gives a more pleasant aesthetic effect.
During the surgery, you can use various types of liposuction / lipoaspiration, microliposuction and ultrasonic liposculpture and combine the various techniques with each other depending on the case and the body region to be treated. The best results are obtained on localized fat deposits that resist weight loss and physical activity.
Diet or liposuction?
Liposuction is not an alternative to a weight loss diet
While the diet serves to reduce adipose mass uniformly, in all body sites both subcutaneous and deep, lipoaspiration serves to reduce excess adipose tissue only in those sites that are subjected to suction.
Therefore, in the presence of generalized obesity, the patient will have to undergo a slimming diet; instead in the presence of adipose swelling localized in some parts of the body (for example hips, buttocks, thighs, shoulders, ankles, double chin, etc.) liposuction, microliposuction and ultrasonic liposculpture are indicated.
Surgery: how liposuction and liposculpture work
Liposuction, microliposuction and liposculpture are surgical interventions in all respects . They must therefore be performed in a sterile operating room by an experienced aesthetic plastic surgeon who is familiar with the principles of surgery and the surgical anatomy of the region to be treated.
The preoperative selection
The general and local condition of the person wishing to undergo liposuction must be checked preoperatively.
Patients unsuitable for treatment are those who suffer from:
- Coagulation disorders
- Heart disease
- Varicose veins
- Hypertension
- Uncontrolled diabetes
Anesthesia
Adepending on the amount of fat to be aspirated ultrasonic liposuction, microliposuction and liposculpture can be performed in:
- Local anesthesia without hospitalization
- Local anesthesia and mild sedation with a short day hospital
- General anesthesia with 1 day of hospitalization
Liposuction surgery: how it works
To aspirate the adipose tissue, a tiny skin incision of a few millimeters is made in the bottom of a skin fold near the “pad” to be removed or in areas that remain hidden. Through this a thin cannula is introduced with one or more suction slits placed near its apex. The surgical instrument, under close and continuous supervision of the surgeon, advances through the adipose tissue to be removed in a continuous back-and-forth motion, removing bits of fat with each step.
The cannula inside is hollow and is connected by a sterile and flexible tube to a device that sucks the fat (lipoaspirator) and that retains the removed fat for the step-by-step evaluation of how much has been removed.
The reduction of the mass of adipose tissue through liposuction is definitive because the removed tissue cannot reform itself. With the surgery, in fact, masses of cells (adipocytes) with all their fat content are removed. They are removed permanently and The result of lipoaspiration is therefore to be considered a definitive correction.
In the event that the person, in the future, should gain weight, it is clear that fat can be deposited again in the remaining fat cells, but it will no longer be able to do it in a disharmonious way, having changed the proportions of the silhouette permanently. The adipose tissue will increase harmoniously together with the other non-operated areas.
Will cellulite disappear?
Liposuction, microliposuction and ultrasonic liposculpture do not directly solve the problem of the so-called “orange peel”, typical of cellulite, which is on a complex metabolic basis, but can indirectly improve it because the compression of the microcirculation is reduced and the compression exerted by the excess adipose tissue on the connective and vascular scaffolding of the skin.
Post-operative: what happens after the liposuction and liposculpture surgery
In the immediate post-operative period, the appearance of bruises in the operated areas is quite frequent; generally they are of modest entity and spontaneously reabsorb within a few days.
Complications of ultrasonic liposuction, micro liposuction and liposculpture are rare in expert hands and in any case solvable. It is necessary for the specialist to make a careful preoperative evaluation of each person who requires liposuction to verify the suitability of the general conditions for the intervention. If well done, it is rare that after some time slight skin irregularities or slight asymmetries of the body contour can be created which, in any case, can be corrected with a small retouch.
After the surgery, you will have to wear an elastic-compression garment for 2-4 weeks.

With modern lipoaspiration techniques, both the deep fat and that immediately under the dermis are removed, allowing the skin to be able to readjust to its new shape and volume thanks to its elasticity.
Liposuction is indicated in cases of alterations of the silhouette in specific points of the body. However, it is important to underline that purely obese patients cannot use liposuction as an alternative to diet.
Fat, or rather adipose tissue, is made up of special cells that retain circulating fats within them, which constitute an energy store.
When the fat is removed with lipoaspiration, in reality, adipose lobules made up of fat cells are removed that will never exist in that area again. It is clear that if a person is predisposed to forming adipose tissue this can accumulate again in the future in the same region, but in a more harmonious way than before because the intervention will still give great permanent improvements in shape.
The adipose tissue is almost devoid of sensitivity. After the surgery, you may still feel a modest pain and feel a swelling sensation in the lipoaspirated area.
Normal daily activities can be resumed immediately. Only demanding physical activities should be suspended to avoid trauma or excessive fatigue. Sport can also be resumed 1 month after the surgery.
In the operated area it will be necessary to wear a specific elastic-compression garment that will help to recover the condition of well-being and protect the tissues. This garment is worn under clothing and remains in contact with the skin. However, you can remove it to wash it and then wear it again the following morning.
You can only expose yourself after any bruising due to the surgery has disappeared from the skin.
The intervention, if well performed, is completely safe. In experienced hands, complications are rare, minor and easy to manage. This is possible thanks to a scrupulous preoperative evaluation of each patient and of all her clinical parameters, excluding those cases in which it is not indicated.
