What is gynecomastia and why does it occur
In some men, the volume of the breasts can increase for various reasons. Often gynecomastia is due to overweight, hormonal changes or the intake of certain drugs, other times it depends on the person’s constitution.
In many cases, the etiopathogenetic cause of gynecomastia is difficult to identify, because the problem is limited to cosmetic damage only. In most cases, gynecomastia affects both breasts , but sometimes it can be unilateral and cause a very visible asymmetry that can cause further discomfort.
How many types of gynecomastia are there
Gynecomastia is common in older men, but can also occur in younger men. There are 3 types of gynecomastia: let’s see them in detail.
True gynecomastia
The increase in the volume of the breasts is due to excessive development of the mammary gland.
False gynecomastia
The increase in the volume of the breasts is due to excessive fat storage.
Mixed gynecomastia
The increase in the volume of the breasts depends on the excessive development of the mammary gland and the simultaneous excess of adipose tissue.
How the surgery works
Surgery for gynecomastia changes according to the causes of the problem.
In the case of false gynecomastia, the intervention consists in the removal of excess adipose tissue through liposuction. This technique is very effective and gives excellent results, with a very rapid post-operative course.
In the case of true gynecomastia, however, the glandular tissue is removed through a small skin incision in the periareolar area, on the border between the dark skin of the areola and light skin, in order to obtain a scar that is not very visible.
The operation for gynecomastia can be carried out as a Day Hospital under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia with one day of hospitalization. The choice depends on the specific case, the extent of the defect to be corrected and also on the patient’s preferences.
What results are obtained with the removal of gynecomastia
The results are immediate and of great satisfaction for the patient. Scars are usually very small, while complications are rare and mostly related to the formation of hematomas or modest irregularities between the two sides; however, both problems can be easily corrected.
Post operative
After the surgery, you must wear an elastic-compression garment such as an elastic band or a specific elastic vest.
The garment, to be worn under normal clothes, must be worn for 3 weeks.
