What gynecomastia is and why it occurs
In some men, breast volume can increase for various reasons. Gynecomastia is often due to overweight, hormonal changes, or the use of certain medications; other times it depends on the person’s constitution.
In many cases, the underlying cause of gynecomastia is difficult to identify, because the issue is limited to an aesthetic concern. In most cases gynecomastia affects both breasts, but it can sometimes be unilateral, causing a very visible asymmetry that can lead to additional discomfort.
How many types of gynecomastia exist
Gynecomastia is common in older men but can also occur in younger men. There are three types of gynecomastia: here they are in detail.
True gynecomastia
The increase in breast volume is due to excessive development of the mammary gland.
False gynecomastia
The increase in breast volume is due to excess fat deposits.
Mixed gynecomastia
The increase in breast volume depends on both excessive gland development and a simultaneous excess of fatty tissue.
How the surgical procedure works
Surgery for gynecomastia varies according to the underlying cause.
For false gynecomastia, surgery involves removing excess fatty tissue by liposuction. This technique is very effective, delivers excellent results, and has a very quick post-operative course.
For true gynecomastia, the glandular tissue is removed through a small periareolar skin incision, at the border between the darker areolar skin and the lighter surrounding skin, to achieve a discreet scar.
The operation can be performed as day surgery under local anesthesia with sedation, or under general anesthesia with one day of hospitalization. The choice depends on the specific case, the extent of the defect to be corrected, and the patient’s preferences.
What results can be achieved by treating gynecomastia
Results are immediate and highly satisfying for the patient. Scars are usually very small, while complications are rare and mostly related to the formation of hematomas or minor irregularities between the two sides; in any case, both issues can be corrected easily.
Post-operative care
After surgery, an elastic compression garment must be worn, such as an elastic band or a specific compression vest.
The garment, worn under normal clothing, must be kept on for 3 weeks.
