Earlobe and the lipofilling technique

When we think of the earlobe, our mind often associates it with earrings: chandeliers, hoops, clips, and so on. However, for both men and women, the earlobe is not just a place for adornments: in some cultures it is also a symbol of prosperity. Archaeological findings of mummies, ancient drawings and prehistoric paintings show that the size of the ear was used as a sign of maturity and, especially in men, as a mark of social status. In our culture, the earlobe is considered a symbol of youth.
How does earlobe aging occur?
Earlobe aging manifests through elongation, wrinkling and deflation, i.e. loss of volume.
Aesthetic doctors and plastic surgeons, therefore, must address earlobe aging comprehensively: they aim to restore volume and shape, as well as eliminate wrinkles and improve aged skin damaged by time and sun exposure, which often causes spots in this area.
There are two ways to restore volume to a deflated earlobe:
- First method – the simpler one is to use a hyaluronic acid-based filler. The patient is treated in-office with microinjections directly into the earlobe. This treatment lasts about 10 minutes and allows an immediate return to daily activities.
- Second method – using the lipofilling technique, i.e. transferring small amounts of autologous fat from a donor area to the earlobe. This technique is more complex than the first but long-lasting and permanent.
Skin rejuvenation and removal of age spots from the earlobe can also be performed with two methods: chemical peels or laser. These techniques can be carried out at the same time as the volume restoration procedure or about two weeks later.
The results are very good and satisfying.
