Facial implants

Facial implants for a more balanced and harmonious face

The goal of the procedure is to provide a more harmonious facial appearance. Facial implants are solid, preformed, three-dimensional devices used to enhance certain areas of the face such as the chin, jawline, nose, and cheekbones. To restore volume in the malar region (cheeks), the surgeon may choose between filler injections, lipofilling, or prosthetic implants, depending on the case, with the goal of achieving a natural-looking result.

The implants, made of various materials (silicone, Gore-Tex, Medpor), come in different sizes and shapes according to the defect to be corrected. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia.

Cheek implants are inserted either through an incision inside the mouth or along the lower eyelid margin, similar to a blepharoplasty. In the case of the chin, the implant is usually inserted through an incision inside the mouth. The implants may be fixed with sutures.

The surgery is typically performed as day surgery, allowing the patient to return home the same day. Normal daily activities can usually be resumed after about a week, while sports activities should be avoided for around 20 days.

Scars are not visible, and any swelling usually disappears within a few days. The final appearance is achieved after approximately six months. The results are stable and natural-looking, with implants neither visible nor palpable. As long as the patient has realistic expectations and requests consistent with their natural features, there are no contraindications to the procedure.

Types of facial implants

  • Chin implants: these implants can increase the size and projection of a chin that is not proportionate to the forehead or midface. A small or recessed chin can make the neck appear fuller instead of defined.
  • Jaw implants: these increase the width of the lower third of the face. Similar to the chin, a weak jawline can appear less defined and blend into the neck. In some cases, both chin and jaw contribute to facial imbalance.
  • Cheek implants: these enhance the projection of the cheekbones, adding volume to areas that appear sunken or flat.
