Aesthetic Breast Surgery: Breast augmentation is the surgical practice most requested by Italian patients

Harmonious female forms, the secret of beauty and seduction. The new trends in cosmetic surgery see breast surgery, the most requested by Italian patients, in the lead in our country. This is confirmed by the data released by the Italian Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, also based on studies by the International Society for Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery. In this scenario, breast cosmetic surgery stands out among the requests that, also for 2022, could make the “lion’s share”, followed closely by rhinoplasty, gluteoplasty (to have a toned and shaped b-side) and face rejuvenation.

The perfect cleavage therefore seems to be the dream of Italian women, and breast surgery in its various applications – mastopexy, breast augmentation and reduction, reconstructive techniques, gynecomastia, prosthesis removal – covers 34% of cosmetic surgery practices carried out every year in the our country. Among these, breast augmentation holds the absolute primacy: it is in fact the most requested surgical practice by Italian patients (18% of the total).

In terms of surgical techniques and safety in the last 5 years, breast surgery has undoubtedly made great strides: just think that the type of result you want to obtain has changed substantially; today most of the patients ask for a natural and harmonious breast, avoiding the stereotypes of “increased physique” that a few years ago could still be coveted.

The prostheses used to increase the volume of the breast are always made with safe materials because they are biocompatible, and can be round or anatomical (i.e. reproducing the teardrop shape of the natural breast) and have surfaces with a different texture. The safety of the new generation prostheses is guaranteed by the certifications that the manufacturing companies must necessarily renew every 3 years, after having passed meticulous checks, and is supported by the strict protocols that operators are necessarily required to apply in the operating room.

The “ compliance ” between surgeon and patient is a very important aspect in the relationship that is created between those who decide to undertake a course of cosmetic surgery and the professional they rely on. The final result will have to technically satisfy the surgeon, but it is essential that it meets the patient’s expectations. This is why a qualified and serious cosmetic surgeon will always be able to advise his patient on the most suitable prosthesis to guarantee the desired result, carefully evaluating the starting anatomical situation and considering the various parameters useful for obtaining harmonious proportions.

There are various techniques for inserting prostheses: retro-glandular, retro-muscular, dual-plane, triple-plane . The choice between these is the responsibility of the surgeon, depending on the starting anatomical situation and associating, if laxity is also to be corrected, a mastopexy surgery.

Adipose tissue transplantation techniques have evolved rapidly over time, as well as knowledge relating to the evolution of the transplanted tissue. Clinical data dispelled the doubts of a few years ago about the possibility that the transplanted cells could degenerate into neoplastic cells, harmful to the body. fat grafting (or lipofilling) today is therefore carried out in absolute safety, and about 60% of the transplanted cells take root in the new site: this translates into a very pleasant result. Like all cosmetic surgery practices, breast augmentation must be performed by an experienced professional.

The mixed or hybrid breast augmentation technique is the one that is most discussed in the scientific community, and more and more surgeons are applying it in the operating room. But what exactly does it consist of? In simple terms, it is a procedure that involves the insertion of the subglandular prosthetic implant, in association with an autologous adipose tissue transplant or lipofilling. The transplanted fat is used to “blend” the contours of the prosthesis, with the aim of obtaining an aesthetically more natural result.

But beware: the proposals for low cost breast interventions, which are rampant online on social networks and on the web, represent a possible threat to women, more or less young. The risk is to rely on doctors and non-top facilities to lower costs. The result, in these conditions, could be unsatisfactory, with the consequence of having to resort to another surgery, the so-called secondary surgery (which constitutes 15% of breast operations) to correct or resolve the damage caused by the previous one. mal-practice .

The proposal of associated surgery should also be carefully evaluated, that is to face several aesthetic interventions in a single session, under general anesthesia: the latter is often promoted by passing on the idea that it involves a saving of time, in terms of postoperative down-time. , and money, since you only have to pay the costs of the operating room once. In fact, several scientific studies confirm that after 5/6 hours under general anesthesia the risk of postoperative problems increases.

Remember that before embarking on a course of cosmetic surgery it is always essential to make sure that the intervention is carried out in facilities that comply with safety requirements, in the presence of an anesthesiologist, receiving precise information on every aspect of the intervention, the result and the course postoperative. If the plastic surgeon belongs to a national scientific society of Plastic Surgery, his experience and professional path will have been evaluated by a committee of Specialists that admits him.
